Kumi Tachi

There are 5 Kumi Tachi. They are simply numbered, from 1 (Ichi) to 5 (Go). Click on the following to jump to a particular Kumi Tachi, or just scroll down.

1. ICHI NO KUMI TACHI

1. Start in hidari (L) tsuki kamae.  
  1. Start in hidari (L) waiting kamae.
2. Step forward with front foot and chokku tzuki.  
  2. Step in off line with front foot and counter with kaeshi tzuki.
3. Shuffle back, lower and circular deflection in-to-out and tsuki to ribs.  
  3. Step across with (R) foot, bring jo up to protect, step around with (L) foot, wind up and strike jodan.
4. Step back with (L) foot, reach forward with (L) hand and grasp end of jo, slide (R) hand to centre of jo, extend both arms and block. Enter with (R) foot and tsuki to chest.  
  4. Step off line with (L) foot, bring jo up to protect, step around with (R) foot, wind up and strike to head to finish.

 


 

2. NI NO KUMI TACHI

1. Start in hidari (L) tsuki kamae.  
  1. Start in hidari (L) waiting kamae.
2. Enter with front (L) foot and chokku tsuki to ribs.  
  2. Move back and offline to the left, lower your center and use circular motion to deflect opponents jo away. Enter with chokku tsuki to the now exposed ribs.
3. Step across (R) and forward with the (R) foot. Bring jo up in a defensive position parallel with the side of the body. Bring the back foot offline, wind up and strike down to opponents (L) knee.  
  3. Move knee (R) slightly to protect it and block with the jo vertical and (R) hand above (L). This should leave the free end of the jo pointing down.
4. Chokku tsuki to ribs.  
  4. Move offline and finish with chokku tsuki to ribs.

 


 

3. SAN NO KUMI TACHI

1. Start in hidari (L) tsuki kamae.  
  1. Start in hidari (L) waiting kamae.
2. Enter with front (L) foot and tsuki to front knee.  
  2. Stay in migi kamae, move front knee off line, grasp top of jo and block.
3. Enter with front foot and tsuki to ribs.  
  3. Step across with back (R) foot, bring (L) hand to (R) shoulder, grasp bottom of jo with (R) hand, lower and stroke opponents jo away, draw jo back and dummy strike to ribs.
4. Move back and try to deflect opponents tsuki.  
  4. Retract jo to avoid opponents deflection and tsuki a final time to ribs to finish.

 


 

4. YON NO KUMI TACHI

1. Start in hidari (L) tsuki kamae.  
  1. Start in hidari (L) waiting stance.
2. Tsuki to ribs.  
  2. Step back and off line to the (L) deeply with the (R) foot, grasp jo about 6 inches down lay jo over shoulders, step forward into migi (R) kamae and strike toma uchi to oppon. head. Catch jo low in (L) hand.
3. Usind tsuki grip, raise jo over head in protective stance. at the same time withdraw (L) foot (in case this was the target).  
  3. Step in with (L) foot and tsuki to ribs.
4. Step across (to the (L)) with the front (R) foot to move ribs out of the attack line, slide (L) hand to the end of the jo, tsuki to chest to finish.  

 


 

5. GO NO KUMI TACHI

1. Start in hidari (L) tsuki Kamae.  
  1. Start in hidari (L) waiting kamae.
2. Tsuki to ribs.  
  2. Step back and off line to (L), lower weight and use circular deflection in to out. Tsuki to ribs.
3. Step back and offline to (R), bring jo to gedan position with (R) hand about one fist down. Step forward with (R) foot and bring jo up in arc towards opposite. (L) ear. Catch jo above head height in (L) hand with weight forward.  
  3. As strike comes in step back with (L) foot and drop down on to (L) knee. Grip jo 1/3 and 1/3 and protect (L) side of body.
4. Step forward with (L) foot and strike straight down towards the top of the head.  
  4. Stand up and at the same time bring (R) hand to end of the jo, deflect incoming strike and finish tsuki to chest.
